2022 SUMMER INTERNS: Matt Jurgensmier

Aurora Cooperative 2 years ago

Hello everyone! My name is Matt Jurgensmier and I am an Agronomy Sales intern out of the Wood River location, with my mentor, location manager, and salesman, Nathan Mayhew. This fall, I will be going into my junior year at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln majoring in agronomy with a minor in agribusiness.

I didn’t grow up on a farm, so farm operations are something I am learning along the way this summer along with learning about agronomy in the field. My dad, Alan Jurgensmier, has always worked with farmers and joined Aurora Cooperative out of the Doniphan location just over five years ago, so I would like to thank him for getting me into a farming career. Blake Grossart, a salesman out of Doniphan, is another person that has taught me a lot and has helped me gain experience while starting out.

This summer has been all sorts of fun, from working on sprayers to looking at fields. Things started off a little slow in the Wood River area because of the hailstorms that wiped a lot of farmers out and caused a great deal of replants. The start of the summer consisted of lots of delivering seed to guys, along with pre-emerge fertilizer. I have also gone on some grower calls this summer, which is something I really wanted to see because I know that can be one of the most difficult tasks for a salesman.

One thing I am most excited about is my project for the summer.  Nate and I helped one of his customers plant a test plot for different Prairie Valley and Brevant hybrids of corn seed and he has me going out there to look for weeds, insects, and diseases, and occasionally make recommendations on what to spray. Working in Wood River allows me to work with other guys within the company such as Blake Grossart, Bryce Consbruck, Steve Engel, and Calvin Rupe (all Doniphan salesmen).

This summer has been everything I expected and more. I have done many things this summer and haven’t been more excited to share everything I’ve learned. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer has planned out for me as I’m sure it will be as good as the rest.
