Allied Nutrition Sales Intern
I’m Sydney Wellsandt, and I’m from Unadilla, NE. I’m a senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln majoring in Animal Science with minors in Agribusiness, Krutsinger Beef Industry Scholars, and Engler Entrepreneurship. This summer, I’m working in the Animal Nutrition division under Dr. Jeff Folmer in Grand Island.
I grew up on an acreage outside of Unadilla, Nebraska, and quickly became immersed in the agricultural industry. Throughout my youth, I showed cattle and was actively involved in my county’s 4-H program and later, the FFA program. These programs provided me with the resources to kickstart a small cow herd and a direct-to-consumer beef operation. These experiences led me to pursue an Animal Science degree which has deepened my passion for serving others and the agriculture industry. I was drawn to Aurora Cooperative because I knew that with an internship here, I’d actively pursue both of these passions.
Through working with Allied Nutrition, I’ve been able to deepen my understanding of animal nutrition and its impact on livestock performance. This summer, I’ve gained valuable experiences in and out of the office. I’ve learned about our software used to calculate bids and price analysis, as well as, balance rations. These tools allow us to identify areas of need for producers and design a feed ration that fits their specific operation. Being located at the mill, I’ve seen the creation of the feed label, the mixing of the grain to match the ration, and finally, the distribution to the customer. It’s rewarding to hear from customers how our products help them and their operations succeed. Through this, I learned the value of building a trusting relationship with customers and providing quality service.
One of my favorite aspects of the internship program was challenging my learning past animal nutrition. Professional Development Fridays, industry tours, crossover days, and hands-on experience gave me insight into the structure of the cooperative and how it positively impacts all sectors of the agricultural industry. As I get ready to wrap up my experience, I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to intern with Aurora Cooperative. This summer has been insightful and has better prepared me for my future in the agricultural industry.
